The Fattoria dei Barbi is owned since 1352 by the Cinelli Colombini family an ancient Siena decent and covers terrains in Montalcino, Scansano and in Chianti for a comprehensive extension of 451 hectares.
In the cellar, visitors may admire a complete collection of bottles from 1870 till today to testify a unique continuity in Italy.
Pioneers both in oenology and in wine traders, the Fattoria dei Barbi awarded several prizes during the years: first wine mail order selling (1936), first export of Brunello di Montalcino in USA (1962), Europe and Japan; first prize “super Tuscan” (Brusco dei Barbi, 1969), first grappa single grapes (grappa of Brunello, 1974).
The cellar has a capacity of 5.000 hectolitres in wooden barrel and additional 15.000 hectolitres in steel barrel. Moreover, it is open for visit since over 40 years.
Total current production reach 800.000 bottles, thanks to over 91,5 hectares of vineyards at low density (5.200 trees per hectare). Qualitative selection is very careful and less than 60% of potential Brunello production real become Brunello.
Since 2001 PMF project (pre cold soaking) has been put in place to re-create the optimal conditions to harvest grapes. The result is today an enriched Brunello, but not altered.
This is since the beginning the philosophy of Fattoria dei Barbi: merge the most evolved technology and tradition, to improve all the products without affecting typicality.
